Shelter NSW media release — 13 June 2012
The housing advocacy group, Shelter NSW, has revealed the final line-up for a conference on affordable housing to be held tomorrow.
Craig Johnston, Acting Executive Officer, said that community organizations are providing a wide range of housing services to people in need, and the innovative and exemplary character of these should be recognized and valued.
‘In these times of economic uncertainty and fiscal restraint, it is amazing that community organizations are able to mobilize a mix of public, private and community resources and deliver good outcomes’, Mr Johnston said.
The keynote speaker will be Professor Peter Phibbs of the Urban Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney. Professor Phibbs will highlight the significant contribution that the nonprofit housing sector makes in a number of areas.
Professor Phibbs said: ‘Nonprofit housing associations have been able to capitalize on the increase in social housing supply that was part of the national response to the GFC. With GFC II a distinct possibility and housing starts at historic lows, another nation-building program involving the nonprofit housing sector is a strategy that governments should have on their drawing boards.’
The conference, ‘Explorations in nonprofit housing’, is being held tomorrow, Thursday June 14, in Sydney, at the NSW Teachers Federation conference centre, 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills. Information about the conference is available from the Shelter NSW website: <www.shelternsw.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63&Itemid=106>.
