State election and housing

Shelter NSW media release – 17 January 2007

Shelter NSW, the state’s nongovernment advocacy organization for low-moderate income consumers, has called on the Government and Opposition to commit to a package of measures to address housing unaffordability in New South Wales.

Mary Perkins, the organization’s executive officer, said that the recent and widespread media coverage of issues affecting private renters and mortgagees was a symptom of malaise in the housing system.

‘The causes of problems in housing markets are many. Some of the solutions are in the Commonwealth’s sphere, some are in the state’s. We believe a NSW government should do everything it can’, she said.

Shelter has called on the Government and Opposition to introduce a range of key measures to help the working poor and other people in Struggle Street:

Shelter has released an options paper on housing issues. This is available for download from www.shelternsw.org.au.

It has also released a guide on housing facts and figures for the media. This is available for download from www.shelternsw.org.au.
