For 30 yrs Shelter NSW has promoted the housing interests of those who are 'doing it tough'.
On Wednesday 23 November 2005 it will celebrate with a seminar 'Housing action: snapshots from the last 30 years – a critical review’
Speakers include key players; residents, community organisations, government Ministers, members of Parliament, public servants and academics:Tom Uren, Jack Mundey, Judy Yates, Vivienne Milligan, John Mant, Ann Weldon, Terry Barnes, Mary Perkins, Karine Shellshear, Jenny Stewart, Grant Arbuthnot, Di Evans, Michael Darcy, Chris Gibson, Col James, Peter O'Keefe, Julie Nyland, Greg Hogan, Richard Perkins, Paul Pearce, Tony Dalton.
The seminar will open up a myriad of topics ...
Remember the bad old days when public housing excluded single people, but public housing was for life … what are the key changes in public housing?
And the role of “Green Bans” … it saved a suburb.
Another topic is the birth of tenants’ rights … why did it take 15 years after the Poverty Inquiry (the law is a “scandal”) before reform legislation was enacted in New South Wales?
What about all those empty properties around Sydney , some of which were squatted?
Speakers will look at the birth of community housing … is it really an alternative to public housing?
Has the lot of homeless people improved?
What about the Great Australian Dream and the fiasco of HomeFund … what was that all about?
Did you know that full time residency in a caravan park and multiple occupancy were both illegal in New South Wales ?
Over the last 30 years there have been many innovations … the women’s refuge movement, the establishment of community housing associations and co-ops, the founding of the Aboriginal Housing Office … what is different about the story of City West?
The seminar is presented by Shelter NSW and the Urban and Regional Planning Program of the Architecture faculty at Sydney University.
Wednesday 23 November 2005 from 9:00 am 5:00 pm, at the Architecture Lecture Theatre 1, Wilkinson Building, Sydney University, 148 City Road, Darlington, Sydney.
